Reaching 13,000+ respondents to shape the future of ALX

With nearly 100,000 graduates, ALX Nigeria has become a leading player in shaping the country's technology talent pipeline, a role that takes on even deeper significance as Nigeria heads into a future where it will host one of the world’s largest youth populations. In this context, education and employability become national imperatives.

This puts ALX at a defining crossroads, not just in its ambition to scale its impact, but in the urgency to protect its lead as more players enter the race to shape Nigeria’s tech talent future. To meet this moment, full of both opportunity and pressure, ALX engaged FourthCanvas as a strategic brand partner.

Our role was to lead a nationwide audience research effort, helping the team gain fresh clarity, uncover deep learner insights, and sharpen the focus needed to sustain leadership in an increasingly competitive space.

Reframing the challenge

Our research surfaced deeper layers of truth about ALX’s market terrain, one defined by rising learner expectations, growing employer demands, and the mounting pressure to stay ahead in an ecosystem that’s moving and developing fast. Across regions, gaps in infrastructure, particularly limited internet access, were also just as critical to learner success as the educational content itself.

These insights and more reframed the challenge: ALX needed to realign its positioning for greater relevance, resilience, and readiness. This became the foundation for a sharper, more responsive shift, one that aligned both the immediate needs of Nigeria’s global digital economy and the long-term opportunity to shape its next generation of global talent.

Uncovering the Nigerian Learner Experience

To chart the path ahead, FourthCanvas conducted a comprehensive market analysis and brand assessment, which encompassed engaging over 13,000 participants from all 36 states and across all 109 senatorial districts, ensuring the data was both representative and actionable.

Yet, what proved the most revealing were the candid stories of their challenges, motivations, and aspirations. From the Kano resident navigating unreliable internet, to the Enugu mother balancing study with family life, to the Lagos entrepreneur acquiring skills to expand her business, these stories grounded our findings in real, lived experience.

Our investigations explored the depths of the tech aspirants' lived realities. Analyzing hundreds of variables, we examined how gender dynamics, infrastructure challenges like connectivity and power supply, alongside individual preferences, including program selection, study commitment, and technology access, collectively influenced learning outcomes.

These insights now underpin our reimagined approach, ensuring ALX evolves into a lifelong career enabler, attuned to the realities of today’s learners and aligned with the demands of Nigeria’s digital and demographic future.

Tangible Outcomes for ALX

The insights uncovered have since translated into tangible strategic outcomes for ALX Nigeria. Most notably, these findings directly informed the development of a new program called Pathway, an 8-month program, designed to address the specific needs of ambitious high-potential high school students in Nigeria who, despite their strong inclination towards international university degrees and global careers in fields like technology, leadership, and entrepreneurship, lacked the financial capacity to access existing preparatory programs.

The research also surfaced context-rich, lived accounts that now serve as a powerful foundation for ALX’s storytelling and brand positioning. With grounded, unfiltered perspectives that reflect the nuanced realities of learners across regions, life stages, and career journeys.

Perhaps most significantly, ALX Nigeria has since seen a 170% increase in applications, including a 32.5% increase in female participation.

Working with FourthCanvas on this research project was quite the adventure. We were able to gather a lot of context on our current perception in the market, we were also able to understand the Nigerian learner much deeper. We continue to refer back to this work as we make other strategic decisions and efforts.
